Foods that lead to depression from your San Diego home care experts.

If you have read any of our previous blogs, then you already know how important your independence is to us here at Casa Companion Home Care Solutions. That independence allows you to stay at home much longer, but that isn’t worth much if you are depressed the entire time. It is no big secret that what you eat affects your health, but did you know that it can also affect how happy you are? We are not only dedicated to help you stay home longer with San Diego home care, but we also want to ensure that you are happy! That is why we have come up with this list of foods that could contribute to depression:

  • Refined sugar- Foods like candy bars may taste great and give you a boost of energy at first, but after around 20 minutes or so, all of that refined sugar will cause your blood glucose levels to drop, which causes a bad mood and a depleted energy level.
  • Artificial sweetener- Replacing your favorite soda with a sugar free option isn’t a great idea, especially if you are already depressed. That is because a common ingredient found in artificial sweetener, aspartame, blocks the production of serotonin. This drop in serotonin can cause bad moods, insomnia and even headaches.
  • Trans fat- Who doesn’t love crispy fried chicken and french fries? While this may make your taste buds happy, it has the opposite affect on your mood.  Studies have shown that trans fats can contribute to depression.
  • Caffeine- Your morning cup of coffee may help you to start the day off with a smile, however it can actually contribute to anxiety and depression.
