49th Annual Barona Powwow – Lakeside

  • What you can expect: The San Diego Reader says “The Barona Band of Mission Indians proudly invites the San Diego community to celebrate Native American heritage at the 49th Annual Barona Powwow over Labor Day Weekend. The three-day cultural celebration starts on Friday, August 30 with gourd dancing at 6 p.m. and a dramatic grand entry of dancers in colorful regalia at 8 p.m. The Barona Powwow will continue Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Hundreds of Native American participants of all ages and from across the country will showcase their dancing skills as they compete in a variety of categories for $80,000 in prize money. In addition to beautiful regalia and dancing, spectators will be able to enjoy hand drum contests, singing and music, authentic Native American food including delicious Indian fry bread tacos, arts and crafts and handcrafted jewelry.”

Birding Basics Class – San Carlos

  • What you can expect: “Join MTRP Trail Guide and experienced birder Winona Sollock for an educational bird identification class. Increase your enjoyment of Nature by learning 5 simple techniques to identify birds at a glance. You will also learn how to use a field guide, so bring one along if you have it. Classes meet at the Visitor Center in Classroom A on the last Saturday of every month (except Nov. and Dec.) at 1:00 p.m. The class is free and open to the public, with no reservations required.”

San Diego Farmer’s Markets – Labor Day Weekend

  • Did you know that there are “5,732 farms within San Diego County are working to turn a profit? Full-time, part-time, large, small, conventional, organic, urban, rural, established or just starting out. Ranking 12th in the nation, San Diego boasts top crops in nursery, flowers, avocados, tomatoes, citrus, chicken, eggs, mushrooms, succulents, and strawberries. 68% of San Diego County farms are 1-9 acres and nearly 19% are operated by women. San Diego County has more certified organic growers than any other county in the nation with more than 400 certified organic farms and San Diego County is home to 44 certified Farmers Markets throughout the county. Farmers Markets are certified by the County Agricultural Commissioner, ensuring that the produce is being sold by the grower, is grown in California, and meets all California quality standards. These criteria ensure that you receive the freshest produce for the right price.

 Full Moon Pier Walk – La Jolla

  • What you can expect: “A warm night lit by a full moon is the perfect time to explore one of La Jolla’s most prominent landmarks. The Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier, normally closed to the public, is used by scientists, students, and aquarium staff for a variety of research projects. It also serves as a platform to collect local marine data and deploy small boats and oceanographic instruments. During this program you will discover the 100-year history of pier-based data collection at Scripps while walking along the Scripps Pier on an exclusive moonlit tour. Collect plankton, learn about bioluminescent organisms, and explore current research while engaging in hands-on activities. Anyone age 9 and up can attend, but minors must be accompanied by a paid adult.”

Hoop Weaving Wall Hanging Craft Workshop – Solana Beach

  • What you can expect: “Join us as we teach you to create your own woven masterpiece! We will show you how to create a loom and provide yarn and string to weave the night away. We will have all the supplies ready to make your personal woven creation including 10” wood hoops, and a variety or colors and sizes of yarn. First beer is on us! No previous experience required, beginners to experts welcome!”
