San Diego is a great place to live year-round for caregivers, home care aides and loved ones, but summer brings out the best in America’s Finest City. This month, you can enjoy the best of bugs in Encinitas, tutoring from teenagers in La Jolla, and the gourmet delights of Downtown Encinitas.

Entomophobes may disagree, but the San Diego Botanic Garden’s Insect Festival is the place to be for scientists of all ages this weekend. The Festival runs July 22 and 23 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m, and will offer face time with the stars of a healthy garden, interactive arts and crafts, and cooking lessons. Get up close and personal with snakes, lizards, and even Madagascar hissing cockroaches – that reach 2 to 3 inches in size! Learn about bug collecting, and everything else ‘bug’ at more than 20 booths manned by local bug experts. Plus, find out what they’re always moaning about on Survivor by trying cooked mealworm larva in flavors like barbecue, teriyaki and mesquite! Entrance to the Festival is free for children under 2, and adults who pay for admission to the Botanic Garden. Just leave your flyswatter at home – this is a bug-friendly event!

Some of us can change a tire, some of us can bake a soufflé, and some of us know what emojis are for. All these worlds can collide at the JCC La Jolla’s Teen Technology Tutors For Seniors sessions on Wednesdays through July 26th. Grandkids are good resources for tech support, and at the Jewish Community Center you can get help from someone’s teenage grandkids. Get help with your smartphone, like changing the icon and text size, downloading useful apps, or taking and sending photos by text. Or, bring your laptop to get familiar with email, Skype and the Internet. This invaluable help is free, if you RSVP in advance with the date (or dates) you want to attend and the kind of device you’re bringing. Don’t forget to charge up your device, and bring your list of questions!

  • When: Wednesdays between June 28-July 26, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
  • Where: Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, Jacobs Family Campus, 4126 Executive Drive, La Jolla, CA 92037
  • Tickets: RSVP in advance to the Senior Dept., (858) 362-1141
